Background
The feasibility of deriving mathematical relationships between arc parameters and weld bead dimensions has been examined for flat position fillet welds made with the MIG cored wire process. The results obtained have shown that it is possible to derive simple equations relating the main arc welding parameters to the main geometrical dimensions of the weld. For the two widely differing cored wire/shielding gas systems examined, equations could be established for each polarity, which differed only in the coefficients applied. The only geometrical dimension which could not be closely coordinated with arc welding was undercut. Further work is needed to establish the factors controlling this variable. It has been demonstrated that the equations developed can be combined to produce an interactive computer program capable of defining the welding parameters needed to produce welds of a required geometry.
