TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 850/2006
I Hadley and P Moore
Background
The European FITNET consortium is currently preparing the basis of a European fitness-forservice (FFS) procedure, to cover assessment of flaws in welded and non-welded metallic structures. The procedure is intended to cover all industry sectors and all relevant failure/ damage modes (fracture, fatigue, creep and corrosion). In order to validate the procedure (i.e. to test it against experiment and experience), case studies illustrating the application of FFS procedures to full-scale tests and/or failure histories are required.
TWI has at its disposal the results of a large number of fracture tests amenable to validation of an FFS procedure. Many of the tests were carried out by TWI, and original test records are available. Tests carried out by other parties were also examined for their suitability for inclusion, along with several failure case histories. The result is a compilation of several hundred fracture case studies, for which input data have been scrutinised and presented in a uniform format, facilitating future analysis by the forthcoming FITNET fracture procedure.
Objectives
- To collate details of a range of full-scale fracture tests and failure case histories that are amenable to analysis using FFS procedures.
- To present the input data in a form whereby they can be used to validate any current or future FFS procedure.
- To analyse the cases in terms of the current BS 7910 assessment procedure (selected cases have been analysed elsewhere using other procedures such as SINTAP, and results are reported here).
