TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 311/1986
By S J Squirrell, H G Pisarski and M G Dawes
Background
This document describes procedures for carrying out fracture toughness tests on weldments of metallic materials. The test method is based upon that described in BS 5762, with appropriate modifications to suit the testing of weldments. The document also gives details of the design of the test specimens, and advice on specimen configuration and notch location for measuring the fracture toughness in different regions of a weldment. The special techniques that need to be employed in preparing welded specimens for testing are described. Details of how the results from the tests are to be interpreted are given, together with a recommendation for metallurgical examination of the specimens after testing.
