Background
Published literature concerning the use of metal powders in the submerged-arc welding of steels is reviewed and the basic concepts involved with metal powders in fusion welding are examined. Mention is made of the various methods of powder addition to the weld, ranging from metal cored wires to manually prefilling the joint preparation with metal powder. A brief examination of published mechanical property levels is shown along with present and potential application areas for the process. It is concluded that the technique already offers potential cost advantages in general fabrication with limited toughness requirements and also has potential advantages for high quality fabrication when combined with some of the latest developments in steelmaking and welding metallurgy.
