TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 335/1987
By R L Jones
Background
The present report describes work carried out to develop welding procedures suitable for the repair of thick sectioned pressure vessel steels which are returned to service without PWHT. The application of the two-layer deposition technique to achieve HAZ microstructural refinement in positional MMA repair welds in thick sectioned C-Mn steel plate was investigated. Suitable two-layer welding parameters were established from single bead-on-plate and two-layer weld deposits. Subsequently, optimum procedures were developed and applied to the repair welding of excavations of up to lm in length and up to 35mm in depth in the vertical and overhead positions, simulating an actual repair. The successful application of the two-layer technique was judged on the basis of the degree of HAZ refinement achieved.
