Background
Work has been carried out to examine hard-facing consumables designed to have reduced levels of expensive, and potentially strategically sensitive, elements (Co, W etc).
Previous research at TWI showed that plasma transferred arc (PTA) deposits produced using a mixture of chromium boride (CRB) or tungsten-vanadium carbide (WVC) "hard" particles and austenitic stainless steel (SS) powder offer potential for hard-facing applications. In the present investigation, high stress abrasion wear tests were performed on these experimental alloys using a pin-on-disc technique. From tests on deposits produced using several different proportions of hard particles and SS powder particles, weight loss, and initial and steady-state wear test data were determined. Metallographic and fractographic examination of the PTA deposits and wear test specimens was performed to correlate deposit microstructure and high stress abrasion wear resistance.
