Background
Metal powder additions during the submerged-arc welding (SAW) of 50 and 75mm thick steel plate have been investigated in order to demonstrate the potential economic and technical benefits of this technique. Specific attention has been given to improving the completion rate in the root region of single V and T butt joint preparations using the powder addition to reduce significantly the effect of the highly penetrating arc.
