Following the development of a synergic control system to simplify the setting up of parameters for pulsed MIG welding, a further study has been made of the feasibility of extending this principle to the steady d.c. open arc and short-circuit MIG welding of steel.
Generalised equations have been developed which adequately describe the MIG welding operation. These have been used in conjunction with simple electronic circuitry to demonstrate steady d.c. arc MIG welding under voltage control, current control and 'thermal pulsing' operation and also for short-circuit arc welding with 'one-knob and trim' control.
This prototype equipment has been successfully demonstrated on a range of welding applications.
