TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 504/1994
By R Phaal, K A Macdonald and P A Brown
Background
The structural assessment of fusion welded plant requires fracture toughness to be quantified in terms of K, CTOD or I. However, toughness is often known only in terms of Charpy impact energy (or some other quality control based parameter). Many correlations have been developed between fracture toughness and simple measures of toughness, such as Charpy energy. This project has involved a review of published correlations, and the development of computer software for application of suitable correlations.
The work described in this report was sponsored by 18 organisations (see Table 1).
Objectives
To collect and review published correlations and establish their intend cd range of applicability; to develop IBM PC compatible software which will enable estimates of fracture toughness to be made for a specific material; and to test the published correlations against independent TWI data sets.
