Background
This report is the first of a series on work (on-going) on calibrating stress wave emission equipment and defining its capabilities. It deals with transducer responses and outputs, where the interests are absolute calibration, in-house checks and in-use checks. Some encouraging first steps towards absolute calibration are noted. Most of the work centres on in-house systems, for which reciprocity techniques were favoured and were used for nearly all the experimental work. Here the use of a standing wave in a test block was rejected on a reproducibility basis end short pulse inputs (square wave, or of selected internal frequency) were preferred. A calibration procedure is proposed which will be followed for a period to gain experience and data to allow the procedure to be improved or confirmed. Data on transducer-output/line matching studies are included.
