TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 94/1979
By S Elliott and E R Wallach
Background
The two solid phase welding processes of diffusion bonding and friction welding are reviewed in terms of the theories and mechanisms proposed for bond formation. These theories are compared and discussed. For both processes, the work relating to the bonding of aluminium and steel is described with emphasis on the use of interlayer materials and alloying elements to control joint properties and also on the formation of intermetallic compounds.
