TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 379/1988
By S W K Chan
Background
In this report a detailed survey of the relevant literature in the calculation of stresses in fillet welds and the use of these stresses as a basis for predicting the static strength of fillet welded joints is given. A different approach, known as the plastic design method, which does not require the exact knowledge of stresses in fillet welds is also included. The current British Standard and foreign codes of practice for the design of fillet welded joints are also discussed. Finally, the two approaches (i.e. the elastic method and the plastic design method) are then critically assessed.
