TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 500/1994
By T B Layzell
Background
This report describes the use of backscattered electrons to obtain a video image of the workpiece surface during welding. It also explains the desirability of avoiding the use of visual optics inside the welding chamber and describes a novel backscattered electron detector and the electronics to interface with it. Photographs of video images of the weld pool and workpiece using the developed imaging technique are shown. The usefulness of the electron camera as a production aid is discussed.
