TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 103/1979
By J Weston
Background
An initial study of arc welding robots has been carried out. This has involved surveys of industrial robots used for arc welding and led to case study work for Research Members using an ESAB/ASEA A30A welding system. The basic units of a robot arc welder which comprise manipulator, controller, power supply and welding equipment are outlined and discussed. Those features of the production system which affect the viability of a robot welding installation are also noted. These cover machine and component accuracy requirements, jig systems, operator skills, cycle times and some aspects of component and machine design. A greater use of robot welders is anticipated as confidence is gained through use and as new machine developments are made.
