Background
When welding C-Mn plate of high Al content (0.085%) with conditions giving high heat input and high dilution welding, better weld microstructures and toughness were achieved with a calcium silicate flux giving a medium weld oxygen content of ~0.05% than with a basic flux giving a low oxygen content of 0.02%. The use of a trailing wire containing ferro-titanium and calcium fluoride was explored with this system. Although it transferred a significant amount of titanium it did not significantly reduce the weld oxygen content, nor did it further improve toughness.
