TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 384/1988
By N A Kennedy
Background
An improved understanding of the algorithms which control MIG/MAG arc welding is needed to enable the process to be automatic and adaptive. In earlier studies at The Welding Institute equations were developed to predict fillet weld geometry from welding parameters. This study evaluates this earlier work as a basis for further development work in this area.
The first phase of this study confirmed the claim that the original equations could be applied generally by performing trials using equipment and materials different from those used in the earlier study.
In a second phase, a study was made into the use of the equations for predicting effective and tolerant welding procedures. The concepts developed were implemented in software which will form a base for further equation development.
