Review of Recent Work on Environmentally Assisted Cracking of Duplex Stainless Steels 1111/2019
By Qing Lu and Mike Gittos
Industrial need
A comprehensive review of the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of duplex stainless steels (DSSs) was conducted by Cottis and Newman in 1995*. Further understanding of the mechanisms, including the influence of materials’ properties, the effect of environmental parameters, and the impact of testing methods, has been developed since 1995. This review was carried out to include the recent developments.

The images show cracking in 2205 duplex stainless steel caused by hydrogen embrittlement. The sample was uncoated and tested at 20°C with applied cathodic protection of -1100mV.
