TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 883/2007
By R Johnson
Introduction
This report summarises part of the work performed in the TWI Core Research Programme with respect to the friction stir welding (FSW) of steels. The first results were reported in 2005 (Johnson, 2005), and covered the FSW of some ferritic steels, using refractory metal W-25Re and ceramic poly-crystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) FSW tools, and further work was reported in 2007 (Johnson, 2007). The mechanical test results of the welds made in 2005, including Charpy toughness testing, were not available when the first report was written, and these are now presented together with the mechanical tests results of welds in three pipeline steels and HSLA-65 steel. The report also includes the results of residual strain analysis performed on selected welds.
Objective
To determine selected mechanical properties of friction stir welds in a range of C-Mn steels.
