Background
A review of the available data on the crack arrest properties of C-Mn, low alloyed and quenched and tempered steels at The Welding Institute and in the open literature has been carried out and consideration is given to the generall feasibility of designing for crack arrest in structural steels. This report also describes methods used in the brittle fracture crack arrest design philosophy. These methods have been considered to fall into three main categories; large scale tests, small scale tests and fracture mechanics based tests to measure the crack arrest toughness values. Lastly, relationships between crack arrest data and production type tests, such as Charpy V notch tests, etc. are reviewed. Attention is then drawn to the limitations of these methods in the light of recent advances in crack arrest concept, test methods and experimental data.
