TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 784/2003
S J Maddox
Background
A study was undertaken by members of the European Pressure Equipment Research Council (EPERC) of fatigue-related issues relevant to the design and operation of pressure equipment. This included the compilation of a catalogue of available data relevant to the fatigue assessment of steel pressure equipment and their evaluation in the light of the fatigue design rules in the CEN Standard. TWI undertook this part of the project and it is the subject of the present report. The findings of the review were used to identify the main future research needs.
Objectives
- To compile a catalogue of fatigue test data relevant to pressure equipment design, concentrating on results obtained from tests on actual pressure vessels where available.
- To compare the fatigue test data with the EN 13445 design curves and corresponding data from plate specimens incorporating the same details.
- To assess the quality of the test specimens used to generate the database for EN 13445 in the light of current design and manufacture practice.
- To identify future research needs.
