Background
The application of gas-shielded arc welding to the advanced Al alloy 8090 (Al-2.5Li-1.5Cu-0.7Mg-Zr) been investigated. Procedures for making butt welds in sheet and plate (1.5 and 6.5mm thick) appropriate to the use of single pass TIG and MIG welding respectively, were developed and the incidence of weld defects determined together with the static strengths of the welds in the as-welded post-weld aged conditions. The solidification crack sensitivity of the test material was compared with the commonly welded Al-Mg-Si alloy 6082 using the Houldcroft test.
