Background
In order that the automation of the welding process can make further inroads into industrial applications, robots and like devices must become flexible to compensate for variation in workpiece fit up and position. Robot programming must also be simpler to allow faster set up times and reduce the high level of technical skill currently required by end users. One way to meet these requirements is to provide robot welding systems with local intelligence so they may adapt to changing workpiece tolerances and positions automatically, thereby reducing the need for reprogramming.
This report presents a model that describes the data and functionality requirements of an intelligent computer aided arc welding system (ICAAWS). The report also describes the selection of specific hardware and software to meet the data and functionality criteria within the model. Additionally it reports on the current state of implementation of such a system.
