TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 391/1989
By G B Holloway and R L Jones
Background
A range of small diameter gas-shielded rutile and metal-cored wires suitable for the all-positional welding of C-Mn steels has been evaluated. Small diameter being defined as 1.2mm or less. The welding performance of the two wire types has been assessed in comparison with each other and with competitive processes. Initially, each wire was used to produce weld beads on flat plate to determine weld deposition characteristics. Subsequently a range of fillet and butt welds was fabricated on 6-25mm thick plate in order to generate welding productivity, welding procedure and weld quality data.
