Background
The variation of metal deposition rate with welding current has been assessed for the submerged arc (SA) welding of C:Mn steel using DC electrode positive, DC electrode negative and alternating current. The influence of subsidiary variables including wire diameter, arc voltage, flux and equipment type has been considered in order to obtain a range of basic deposition data for the process.
This information was applied in a series of welding trials designed to improve control in multipower SA welding. A range of conventional multipower welding procedures were modified using high deposition rate techniques with suitable alteration to joint preparations and welding conditions, in efforts to reduce heat input and dilution. Results indicate that high deposition methods give added flexibility to multipower SA systems, and may in principle be used for controlling heat input and weld metal dilution especially in one and two pass applications.
