TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 133/1980
By J C McGlone
Background
This report attempts to give perspective to the studies made into procedure optimisation for submerged arc welding during the past decade. The results have been presented in different forms as the ideas developed. Initially the now widely accepted procedural 'tolerance boxes' were established. This led to the development of equations capable of accurate weld bead geometry prediction for both square edge and single V close butt joints. Greater flexibility of the predictive equation set was then attained through the use of an interactive computer program, and procedural 'fields' for prepared joints were established.
