Background
A video system for control of weld bead penetration in TlG welding has been designed and constructed at the University of Liverpool in conjunction with The Welding Institute. The system measures the weld spot size during the pulse current period by means of a fibre optic image guide and video camera system. The microcomputer based controller controls the pulse time to produce the desired weld spot size. The system has been evaluated for stainless steel using a variety of joints in a range of plate thicknesses and joint types.
