TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 78/1976
By C F G Baxter
Background
Commercially available equipment has been used to investigate the potential advantages gained by simple harmonic electrode weaving when producing vertical fillet welds with mechanised 'dip transfer' CO2 arc welding. The effect of the simple lateral weaving variables (lateral weave displacement frequency and end dwell periods) on the range of welding conditions with which it was possible to produce sound welds was identified. It was further possible to characterise the range of suitable welding conditions in terms of weld characteristics, namely weld metal leg length, root penetration and weld bead profile.
