Background
As part of a project to predict weld properties from submerged arc welding parameters and material characteristics, an experimental determination has been made of HAZ thermal cycles at various positions along the fusion lines of single electrode submerged arc welds at nominal energy inputs of from 1.5-6. 0kJ/mm. The results of these experiments, expressed in terms of retention time above 1000°C and cooling times over the range 800-500°C and 800-300°C, were compared with predictions based on heat flow theory. Reasonable agreement between experimental results and certain of the predictive methods was reached.
