TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 234/1984
By M L E Davis
Background
Reactions occurring in the submerged-arc welding of steel have been considered. Analytical data from earlier work and consumable manufacturers have been examined in the light of results of PASEM inclusion analysis. Trends in the transfer of Mn, Si, Al and S have been identified, weld metal contents of the first two elements in particular depending on reactions involving silicates. Further work is required in view of the complex element interactions indicated by inclusion analyses, and because the results indicate that distinction is necessary between reactions in the arc and in the weld pool.
