A critical review is made of tests used to evaluate fracture toughness in heat affected zones (HAZs) of multipass welds in structural steels. These include Charpy V, NDTT, CTOD and wide plate testing techniques.
Background
Attention is drawn to shortcomings with the Charpy V test in identifying local brittle zone (LBZ) behaviour. Although HAZ thermal simulation offers possibilities for reducing problems with testing multipass welds, some limitations of the technique are described.
