Background
Arc spraying has the highest deposition rate of the thcrmal spraying processes and is a major consumer of solid wires normally used in MIG and TIG welding. Arc spraying is widely used for depositing corrosion resistant coatings onto large outdoor steel structures and for the reclamation of worn or over-machined components.
This study reviews the factors determining the spray particle characteristics in terms of particle size, temperature and velocity, and the effects of the spray particle characteristics on coating quality in terms of bond strength, porosity, surface roughness, oxidation and residual stresses.
