TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 315/1986

Background
A programme of measurements of surface and internal residual stresses at repair welds in C-Mn-Si-Al, C-Mn-Si and Mn-Ni-Mo steel test panels has been completed. The repair cavities were located at the HAZ of pre-existing butt welds in panels of thickness from 50 to 105mm. The repair welds were deposited by the MMA and pulsed MIG processes, using a two-layer technique to control the HAZ microstructure. The panels were restrained by strongbacks during repair welding and residual stress measurement, and were not subject to postweld heat treatment.
