Background
Methods for the weld deposition of stainless steel overlays on nuclear reactor pressure vessels are reviewed. Metallurgical factors are considered, with attention being paid both to control of cladding composition and microstructure and to problems that have arisen during fabrication and service. Consideration is given to the necessity for cladding in respect to service in light water systems.
