By A A Willoughby
Background
The technology of expert systems has been reviewed. Although reference has been made to the techniques of knowledge representation employed in certain major systems, the emphasis has been placed more on relatively modest ones, which would run on microcomputers and could be based on expert system shells. Published work relating to engineering and materials is discussed, and several commercial shells are examined. Some potential applications for the engineering of welded structures are proposed.
