When TWI received a telephone call from Comex Nucleaire SA (based in Marseilles, France) seeking information which could be used in the decision-making process being undertaken by senior management, the Weldasearch office were only to happy to help. Comex were looking at numerous applications for which automated arc welding would be beneficial and were working to a hectic deadline so that recommendations could be made quickly and a plan of action worked out.
Comex were pleasantly surprised to find that TWI's bibliographic database, Weldasearch, could be swiftly accessed by TWI's information specialists, and so they immediately commissioned a search. Within hours, Comex had been faxed several pages of brief summaries of relevant sources of technical and commercial information including journal articles, conference proceedings, books and reports originating from all over the world.
From the selection of abstracts received, they identified six as being very appropriate to their needs and ordered full text photocopies of these documents from TWI's library. As the request was urgent, express delivery was used and the full articles arrived in Marseilles within 2 days of the initial telephone call from France. By using Weldasearch, a database that is devoted to the sourcing of welding and joining information, including materials properties, engineering and design, quality and inspection, health and safety, Comex saved themselves many hours of painstaking research. They can now feel confident that the decisions they make will be based upon sound information.
