Barrikade is a new material developed at TWI which offers fire and thermal resistance (1000◦C plus for greater than one hour), at low density, beyond that seen in commercial materials.
Aircraft floor structures, internal fixturings, cargo holds - any structure that may need to prevent the rapid transfer of flames or heat to protect people or equipment, is now a possibility with a light weight and low cost material.
Made of ceramic with no toxicity problems, the material can be manufactured as a sandwich panel between ceramic or metal, or sprayed in place. Once formed and cured the material can be machined as easily as wood.
So far, the developments have been on the non-structural use of the material, but reinforcement may open up opportunities for certain structural parts.
