GEC Paxman Diesels Ltd commissioned TWI to perform short-run weld repairs on low magnetic signature cylinder blocks. Paxman undertook repairs of the Deltic engine blocks and when the company discovered cavitation erosion on the water side of some cylinder blocks it asked TWI to carry out repair work, as it would be far quicker and more economical than procuring new cylinder block castings.
TWI chose the MIG process to perform local repair on the aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder blocks. The work programme involved the development of a suitable repair technique during which measurements were taken to ensure that distortion was kept to a minimum. Repaired areas were dressed and inspected using the dye penetrant technique.
