TWI Technology Consultant for Thermal Processing Technologies, Dr Raja Khan PhD CEng FWeldI FIMMM is due to present at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of The Welding Institute’s North Scottish Branch.
The AGM will take place on 30 January, 2025, with Dr Khan due to present on, ‘Near Net Shape Manufacturing using Powder Metallurgy Hot Isostatic Pressing (NNS PM HIP).’
About the Presentation
Manufacturing of high performance and complex parts in a cost-effective and resource efficient manner is one of the key challenges industries are currently facing. Traditional manufacturing processes, such as casting-forging, machining and welding, do not offer the required flexibility in the design and manufacture of high value engineering parts efficiently or without significant material wastage. Moreover, engineering materials processed through traditional manufacturing processes usually possess a range of defects such as porosity, elemental segregation, anisotropy in microstructure and materials’ properties, etc.
The near net shape powder metallurgy, hot isostatic pressing (NNS PM HIP) technique represents a valid alternative, which can guarantee the manufacture of complex parts with superior isotropic materials’ properties.
This presentation will provide practical examples on the design strategies used to manufacture near net shape parts through the NNS PM HIP technique, along with details of the microstructural and mechanical properties of parts manufactured with the process.
