Environmental Material Testing for Structural Integrity

Technical Groups 05 November 2024

Structural Integrity Technical Group Webinar: Environmental Material Testing for Structural Integrity

Who should attend?

Anybody interested in the performance of materials in a challenging environment especially hydrogen and sour service. This webinar will be of interest to engineers, technologists and technicians involved in material testing or structural integrity assessments.

What will you learn?

The webinar will cover the status of material testing for both sour and hydrogen service. The transition to hydrogen presents a lot of uncertainty about its impact on properties important for structural integrity; these include tensile properties, toughness and fatigue performance. Sour service while better understood still presents many challenges. This webinar will cover both actual testing and how we apply the results.

Experts from industry will be presenting on a range of topics:

  • Matt Haslett, Team Leader - Environmental Testing , TWI Ltd - Mechanical testing of metals in H2 and H2S environments
  • Olivier Ravier, Element - Environmental fracture toughness testing
  • Bostjan Bezensek, Shell - Codification of hydrogen material testing
  • Henryk Pisarski, Consultant - Using results from environmental testing for structural integrity assessments

Please note that the event will be recorded

Speakers

Matthew Haslett MBA CEng MIMechE FWeldI IWE - Team Leader - Environmental Testing

Matthew Haslett MBA CEng MIMechE FWeldI IWE

Team Leader - Environmental Testing
TWI Ltd

Matthew is Team Leader - Environmental Testing in the Fatigue and Fracture Integrity Management Section, with experience in mechanical and structural engineering. His main areas of expertise lie in fracture toughness testing, mechanical testing, Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA), full-scale testing and bespoke mechanical testing.

Matthew also organises TWI’s training course on Structural Integrity Assessment to BS 7910 and lectures on the Design and Construction module of the EWF/IIW Welding Diploma. He completed his MBA studies and senior leader’s apprenticeship with DMU and NSIRC in 2023.

Dr Bostjan Bezensek - Senior Inspection and Integrity Engineer

Dr Bostjan Bezensek

Senior Inspection and Integrity Engineer
Shell

Dr Bezensek has a background in fracture mechanics application to structural integrity. Since 2016 he is overseeing material qualification of sour service pipelines in Shell and since 2021 he is co-leading the Shell internal and the EPRG (European pipeline research group) programmes in material qualification for transmission of gaseous hydrogen by pipelines.

He is the lead author of the EPRG guidelines on small scale material testing in gaseous hydrogen and active in several industry consortia and national standards.

Dr Henryk Pisarski -

Dr Henryk Pisarski

Retired

Until 2014 Dr Henryk Pisarski was employed by TWI Ltd, Cambridge, UK as Technology Fellow on structural integrity issues concerned with the application of fracture mechanics for the avoidance of fracture in welded engineering structures.

In 2008 he received the Larke-Lillicrap Award from The Welding Institute for his contribution to welding knowledge and in 2019 the Harry Brooker Award for outstanding personal achievement. He chairs the BSI committee ise/101/4 on fracture toughness testing, which is responsible for BS 8571(SENT testing) and supports BS EN ISO 12135 (fracture toughness) and BS ISO 15653 (fracture toughness testing of welds). He is a member of ISO committee ISO/TC164/SC4/WG3 which is responsible for ISO 15653 and ISO12135. He is a member of the BSI WEE37 committee which is responsible for BS 7910 (Guide to the methods for the acceptability of flaws in metallic structures) and chairs the material properties panel (WEE37/-/07). He is a volunteer with the National Trust at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridge.
