Aluminium Federation (ALFED) Transport Innovation Forum

Conferences 23 October 2024

Vito Di Petro of ESA Technology Broker UK, TWI Ltd is taking part in a panel session during the Aluminium Federation’s (ALFED) ‘Transport Innovation Forum’ on the 23 October, 2024.

Taking place at the Bragborough Hall Business Centre in Daventry, this event will explore the latest advancements in aluminium applications across a range of transport industry sectors. The forum will spotlight aluminium’s benefits for the transport industries and investigate the potential for aluminium use in fostering a greener transport network in the UK.

About the Panel Session

Vito will join fellow panellists, Geoff Scamans (Professor of Metallurgy at Brunel, University of London and Chief Scientific Officer of Innoval Technology) and Shiva Sundaram (Funding Director, RNDO) between 12:00 and 12:30 for their session about, ‘Opportunities for the UK Aluminium Industry in Space Applications.’

Most people probably don’t realise just how much their daily lives interact with space, such as cars being assisted with navigation by GPS and food getting ordered online, which are both assisted by communications and navigation provided by space assets.

As the cost of getting into space has reduced dramatically due to a variety of technological advancements, entrepreneurship, and private investment, there are major opportunities for the aluminium industry with potential applications for both wrought and cast alloys and for the exploitation of additive manufacturing technologies.

These opportunities could be as part of the ‘backbone’ of space interaction; launch vehicles, satellites, rockets and the ground equipment required or as part of the ‘reach,’ which are those applications that use the ‘backbone’ to provide goods and services to those on Earth.

The space economy is likely to almost triple in the next ten years, from $630.0 billion to $1.8 trillion, which will open up even more opportunities for interaction between space and non-space entities.

This presentation will explore these activities and explain how you can get business and technical support to enter the space industry market. In addition, the session will outline the changing landscape for UK supply chains and how both to engage with, and benefit from, these developments - including guidance and support from UKSA, and anecdotal experience of “new market entry” from the UK SME community.
