TWI Technology Fellow, Dr Alan Taylor FRSC FIMMM, is due to deliver important information on the changing landscape of PFAS regulations at an upcoming PFAS workshop to be held in Brussels on 10 September 2024.
He will also highlight some of the emerging high performance PFAS-free coating technologies and provide useful guidelines on how to manage and reduce PFAS-related business risks to achieve a competitive advantage.
Furthermore, Industrial Members of TWI are eligible for a discount if you book your place at the workshop by 6 September 2024 (see below for Industrial Member registration link).
The workshop, which is being hosted by Applied Market Information Ltd (AMI), is designed to dissect the effects of proposed legislation that may ultimately result in the ban of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and their derivative materials in the polymer industry.
PFAS, a diverse group of chemicals renowned for their durable properties, are widely used in sectors ranging from chemicals to packaging. However, they pose significant environmental and health concerns due to their persistence, mobility, and bioaccumulation tendencies, which have led to regulatory pressures against their use.
Against this backdrop, legislative changes are poised to reshape industry practices that could create supply chain risks as a result of restricted use or an eventual ban.
The proposal to universally restrict PFAS within the EU will be discussed again in September by the two key committees who will prepare the final recommendations for the EC. These committees (SEAC and RAC) are considering the original proposal and over 5600 contributions received during the consultation phase. Contributions were received from a wide constituency including industry and industrial trade bodies, NGOs, academia and even individuals. The scale of the contributions was unprecedented and, of course, spanned the spectrum of opinion. The original timeline was for these committees to present their opinion to the EC in 2024 and for the EC to make a decision that would enter into force in 2025, becoming effective in 2026/7.
Join Alan Taylor and other industry leaders, policymakers, and experts for a comprehensive discussion on the future of PFAS regulations and how to navigate the evolving landscape effectively.
