SafeXtend Webinar: Transforming Construction Productivity

TWI 05 December 2024

Transforming Construction Industry Productivity – Training through Artificial Intelligence (AI) Powered Virtual Reality

TWI Innovation Network is pleased to invite you to attend this upcoming webinar focused on SafeXtend – an exciting, current collaborative project that is addressing ongoing issues in the construction industry related to skills shortages, the rising cost of training and ensuring the safety of site personnel – with the development of a new, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered, virtual reality (VR) training platform.

During the webinar your speakers, from the SafeXtend consortium, will explain the background to the project and the solution it delivers – together with insights on how AI, 3D modelling, computer vision, natural language processing, VR and other technologies are being applied within the platform – and the expected benefits to construction industry employers and their workforces from using SafeXtend.

Agenda

Presentations include:

  • An Introduction to Virtual Reality (VR) – Dr Edgar Segovia, Energy Consultant, V-LAB
  • Developing Safer Construction Sites through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and VR Innovations – Dr Abiodun Ayodeji, Research Fellow, Brunel University of London
  • Understanding the SafeXtend Training Solution – Azhar Nalakath, Technology Associate, V-LAB
  • With more to follow

Free to attend: pre-registration required.

Speakers

Dr Edgar Segovia - Energy Consultant

Dr Edgar Segovia

Energy Consultant
V-LAB

Dr Edgar Segovia specialises in energy efficiency, thermal comfort and their applications in decarbonisation, smart grid integration and building modelling using digital twin technology. He has extensive experience in forecasting electricity consumption and leading net-zero projects aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in the UK. Edgar's expertise was developed through his involvement in the eDREAM, EU-funded project where he contributed to energy demand prediction and the implementation of demand response strategies. He has also worked on electrification projects in Kenya and provided training at the Microgrid Academy in Nairobi, a European-funded initiative designed to equip future energy professionals with technical and conceptual knowledge.

Edgar holds a PhD in Psychology from Teesside University, where his research focused on thermal comfort and the interaction between energy models and human behaviour. He obtained an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Teesside University, as well as an MSc and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Sapienza University in Italy. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad Central de Venezuela. Edgar’s academic and professional background blends technical expertise with a human-centred approach, establishing
him as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.

Azhar Nalakath - Digitalisation and Technology Associate

Azhar Nalakath

Digitalisation and Technology Associate
V-LAB

Azhar specialises in virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D scanning for engineering applications. His expertise in extended reality solutions and digital modelling aligns with V-LAB’s mission to enhance safety and efficiency in engineering projects through advanced technological integration. Azhar holds an MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering with Distinction from Teesside University, where he honed his skills in project management, digital twin technology and Building Information Modelling (BIM). He previously worked as an Associate Quality Analyst at Bentley Systems, contributing to the development of precise geometric road alignments and corridor designs using Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer. In this role, he was responsible for testing, design refinement and collaborating on large-scale projects, demonstrating his attention to detail and technical adaptability.

At V-LAB, Azhar has been integral to projects such as SafeXtend, an Innovate UK-funded initiative focused on developing AI-powered VR training for the construction industry. His work encompasses drafting project proposals, managing documentation, and maintaining effective stakeholder communication to meet project targets. With skills in LiDAR-based scanning and BIM, Azhar streamlines project workflows and optimises resource allocation, supporting V-LAB’s goals of advancing digitalisation in engineering. His technical acumen and dedication to innovative solutions make him a valuable asset to V-LAB's contributions to clean technology and energy efficiency.
