A research consortium comprising members from seven European countries and including TWI has been awarded the JEC Americas Innovation Award in the process category for its work in developing an integrated process chain for flexible and automated production of composite products. The FibreChain project, due to be completed in June 2014, has developed a path for improved production of 3D-shaped, multi-layered products based on fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) while reducing costs, gaining better resource and energy efficiency, and increasing fabrication flexibility. TWI’s role in the project has been in developing joining technologies that provide alternatives to the laser based methods used in other aspects of the project. TWI is also responsible for dissemination and exploitation activities in the project.
The JEC Group, one of the largest composites industry organisations in Europe recognises new worldwide developments in the fields of composites and their processing every year. The criteria for the JEC Innovation Award are: high technological quality, outstanding partnership in the process chain, marketing potential, and originality.
