Resistance Welding and Mechanical Fastening Laboratory

This laboratory is used for resistance spot, flash and resistance, projection and seam welding, as well as high-frequency welding and micro and miniature resistance welding. In addition, it carries out mechanical fastening, including sheet joining, plastics and composites and structural engineering. Laboratory capabilities include commercial clinching and riveting, as well as static, fatigue and impact testing, while offering advice on process selection, best practice, engineering design on machine-threaded fasteners and materials science support. With expertise on hybrid joints, fasteners and adhesives, this laboratory can also provide information on the mechanical properties of fastened joints.

The work carried out here has helped develop process and quality standards and allows TWI to offer comprehensive technical and specialised support services, consultancy and project work.
