Watch CRP Webinar: AI for NDT Scanning of Unknown Geometries

Fri, 06 October, 2023

The TWI Core Research Programme (CRP) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its third webinar for 2023. The event focused on the CRP-funded technology project, "Artificial intelligence for NDT scanning of unknown geometries using collaborative robots." The webinar recording is now available for Industrial Members to watch online.

The event was well-attended by TWI Members from various fields, including aerospace, power, and transport.

During the webinar, we were joined by the guest speaker Kevin Pickup, Lead Technologist for Product Verification at BAE Systems, who also serves as an industrial mentor for our project. Kevin shared his insights on the project's significance for BAE Systems and emphasised the importance of automated inspection in ensuring the long-term performance of aircraft.

Kevin remarked, "...our customer requires a record of inspection to maintain the life of the aircraft for both stages, during production and in-service inspection. Manual inspection is time-consuming, and automation is the only way forward. The project undertaken by the CRP addressed the key industrial need and provided us with a higher data integrity through assisted and automated analysis."

Calum Hoyle, Senior Robotics Engineer, Advanced NDT at TWI, gave an insightful presentation and provided an overview of the project. The talk covered implemented applications of robotics, the utilisation of deep-learning networks and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for goal-oriented action planning, and developed algorithms used to correct the motion and orientation of collaborative robots (Cobots) based on force and ultrasonic feedback.

In addition, Calum discussed in depth the integrated phased array probe and implemented search algorithms to identify the benefits and drawbacks of the developed system.

If you missed the webinar or would like to watch it again, you can access the recording of the webinar.

Please note that the link will direct you to the Industrial Member portal, and you will be required to log in to access the webinar recording.

The complete Industrial Member report on the project will be made available soon to our Members. The insights produced from this research will help manufacturing supply chain members at TWI to reduce setup time, and utilise high-quality data to improve performance and prevent accidents by leveraging AI-automated techniques for in-service inspection, manufacturing and assembly stages.

Our last webinar of the series, "Extreme High-Speed Laser (EHLA) Application Coatings," is scheduled to take place on 1 November 2023, from 13:00 to 14:00 GMT [UK time], book you delegate place today.
