TWI Industrial Members are invited to join a new joint industry project (JIP) dedicated to improving the quality and reducing the cost of powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (PM HIP) manufactured parts.
This project is relevant to industries including aerospace, oil and gas, chemical, defence, nuclear, fusion, or any other where there is a need to manufacture large, complex engineering components. Currently, these parts are typically made from castings and/or forgings that then require extensive machining and possibly welding operations.
Powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (PM HIP) could provide a valid alternative to traditional manufacturing processes, meeting increasingly complex design and operating conditions as well as reducing material wastage. This material wastage can be as much as 90% with traditional manufacturing methods as industries require parts with complex geometries. This is not just expensive in material costs, but also wasteful in a resource-conscious society.
In addition, the need for an alternative manufacturing route is becoming increasingly important due to the limited capability and expertise to make such parts through traditional means, which can cause price rises, a lack of competition in the market, increased lead times and long supply chains. PM HIP can solve many of these issues, while providing superior mechanical properties. However, there are still some barriers to the widespread adoption of the process by industry.
This joint industry project (JIP) will assist TWI Industrial Members in overcoming the barriers to adopt PM HIP, providing a route for you to adopt the process for the smart manufacturing of parts in near net shape form, reducing supply chain length, material wastage, carbon footprint and delivering superior mechanical properties.
Our joint industry projects allow our Members to pool resources to jointly fund the research; in return gaining exclusive access to updates and outcomes from the JIP for a fraction of the overall project cost.
