TWI staff have successfully completed a new industry standard qualification in X-ray Computed Tomography.
X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT), also referred to as 3D non-film, is an advanced digital radiography inspection method that allows the true volumetric non-destructive evaluation of components. Characteristics of the internal structure of a component, such as dimensions, shape, internal defects, and density, are readily available from XCT images.
XCT offers the aerospace industry an inspection solution for the increasing need for high-resolution 3D inspection. The UK National Aerospace NDT board (NANDTB) is working towards bringing XCT in line with traditional NDT in terms of making XCT a standardised inspection technique and up-skilling personnel with a consistent approach across the aerospace industry.
The EN4179 model for emerging methods is being by used by the NANDTB as a basic template and incorporates the three main elements for qualification: formal training, experience, and assessment.
Rolls-Royce and TWI collaborated together to undertake the ISA 3D non-film theory training and practical exams.
TWI and Rolls-Royce (both EN4179 organisations) are among the first companies in the UK to train and qualify their Digital Radiography staff to the new internationally recognised aerospace standard in X-ray Computed Tomography.
Congratulations to TWI Digital Radiographers, Principal Technician Carl Forrest and Principal Engineer Alan Clarke, who completed the XCT general theory and practical training, and who are now recognised as holding Level II Aerospace.
