New Structural Integrity Podcast Released

Tue, 04 June, 2024

The latest edition of TWI’s ‘Undistilled Engineering’ podcast has been released, discussing the topic of structural integrity and TWI.

Marketing Group Manager, Mike Emmett was joined by Consultant, Dr Carol Johnston and Director of Research, Dr Paul Woollin for the podcast, which covered a range of topics related to structural integrity, fatigue testing, weld failures and more.

Dr Johnston began by offering some background information about her education, career and experience, before talking about how fatigue testing has developed over the years at TWI.

The podcast also touches upon deterioration mechanisms, failure and the fatigue performance of welds, covering our earliest work in this area with the fatigue cracking of the Liberty Ships during World War II right through to modern concerns related to net zero, in-service monitoring and testing related to cyclic loading.

Carol and Paul also spoke on the importance of predicting failure for asset life extension and how laboratory data created by TWI continues to inform codes and standards in this area.

The podcast also touched upon the future for structural integrity, including for applications like offshore wind, nuclear fusion, and the emerging hydrogen economy. With past fatigue rules being intentionally conservative in nature, Carol and Paul mentioned the growth of probabilistic engineering assessments and ongoing condition monitoring.

The podcast closed with a discussion of the TWI Core Research Programme (CRP), our Joint Industry Projects (JIP) and the resurgent role of academia in structural integrity.
