TWI operates several different types of project for our Industrial Members, ranging from the Core Research Programme (CRP) to Collaborative and Joint Industry Projects (JIP) and Single Client Projects (SCP). All of these types of project are fulfilled for the benefit of industry and our Members, but each has its own scope and focus.
Core Research
Projects that fall under the Core Research Programme (CRP) provide a market-driven schedule of research to investigate areas that are relevant to a broad range of industry sectors. The results of this multi-million pound schedule of research are made available to TWI Member companies, whose interests, in turn, determine the direction the research takes. The aim of these projects is to build a knowledge base in design integrity, materials engineering and joining technology for the exclusive benefit of our Industrial Members. This would encompass expertise in the widest possible range of welding, joining and allied processes. These projects also promote technology transfer and allow our staff to maintain their skills and expertise at the leading edge so that we can provide other services to our Industrial Members.
The topics investigated under the Core Research Programme are based on the technical challenges, trends, needs and perspectives of our Industrial Members, allowing us to steer the programme accordingly and develop knowledge and technologies to support the objectives of Member organisations. The value of this research has totalled over £120m of investment on behalf of our Industrial Members over the last 40 years.
Outcomes from the CRP are reported to Industrial Members via reports produced at the conclusion of a project, technical papers and articles on the TWI website, technology briefings, research seminars and technical meetings held exclusively for Industrial Members to present and discuss specific aspects of the work of the CRP.
Joint Industry Projects
Our joint industry projects (JIPs) allow Industrial Members with shared interests to combine their investment as project sponsors to gain exclusive access to the project outcomes. These projects typically involve between three and ten sponsors, who are able to influence the direction of the work to meet their specific needs while receiving updates on project progress during the duration of the JIP. Our JIP programme covers a wide range of different topics related to both specific and wider industry problems and challenges.
Single Client Projects
Each year, TWI completes hundreds of confidential single client projects (SCPs) for our Industrial Member companies. These projects allow you to engage with our experts and use our capabilities as if they were your own to solve specific challenges. The outcomes of these projects are not shared with our wider Membership network and each project is concluded with a personalised customer survey that determines the success of the project, while allowing us to constantly improve our services for the benefit of our Members. We understand the importance of research and innovation, so the outcomes of each SCP are confidential, with the associated intellectual property being owned by the client. This confidential and exclusive support means that you can trust us with projects of critical importance.
Collaborative Projects
TWI also partakes in projects that have been funded by bodies such as Innovate UK or the European Union. We assess open calls to find opportunities that benefit wider industry as well as assessing whether any of our Industrial Members may be suitable to join the project alongside us, providing a route to funded opportunities for our Members.
