A GeoSmart project paper is due to be presented at the AMPP Conference and Expo 2024 in New Orleans, USA.
Shiladitya Paul, Research and Product Development Programme Manager for project partner TWI, is due to present, ‘Performance of Damaged Thermal Spray Coatings In Phase Change Materials (PCMs) Used In Geothermal Plants’ on 5 March at 11:25 (local time) in Room R8.
The paper details an investigation of using thermal spray aluminium (TSA) on carbon steel to enhance the corrosion resistance in phase change materials (PSMs) used in geothermal plants.
The aim was to see whether the coatings would protect the steel if damaged, so carbon steel substrates were coated with TSA and exposed to molten nitrate-nitrite PCM after a defect had been created in the coating to expose the steel substrate.
The study encompassed coating selection, specimen preparation, exposure to molten PCM, visual inspection, and comprehensive characterisation, with the findings enhancing our understanding of coating performance and materials degradation in nitrate-nitrite PCM.
The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) is a global community of professionals who are dedicated to advancing corrosion control and protective coatings for materials protection.
